How to clean blinds and shutters without damaging them

Start with the material, then choose the method. Here is how to remove everyday dust, handle stubborn marks and plan a more detailed clean without treating every window covering the same way.

How do you clean blinds without taking them down?

For routine dust on suitable, reachable slatted blinds, leave them installed, remove loose dust gently from both faces and inspect what remains. Only move on to spot cleaning if the product’s care instructions allow it.

Do one window first. You can judge the condition, the access and the amount of work before committing to every room. If you cannot identify the material, find the order details or the manufacturer’s label before adding a cleaning liquid.

1. Clear the window and gather a small cleaning kit

Move plants, ornaments and light furniture out of your working area. Have clean microfibre cloths, a soft vacuum brush if suitable for the product, and a towel for the sill ready. Keep any approved cleaning solution aside until the dry work is finished. Do not balance on furniture to reach the top.

2. Lower the blind and check its condition

Look for cracked slats, loose brackets, frayed cords and peeling finishes. Operate the blind using its normal control; do not pull it into position by the slats. Stop if the fittings move or the mechanism catches. Cleaning is not a substitute for a repair.

3. Remove dust from both sides

Tilt the slats to expose one face and work from the top down, with a light touch. Reverse the tilt for the other face and check the overlap areas. Support thin slats rather than squeezing or bending them. Blinds.com describes this two-sided dust-removal approach in its blinds cleaning guide.

4. Inspect before treating marks

A surface that looks dirty from across the room may need only dust removal. If a mark remains, follow the relevant material section below. Try an approved method in a discreet place first and stop if colour transfers, the finish changes or the slat becomes tacky.

5. Finish the surrounding area

Collect fallen dust from the sill and floor, check the edges in daylight and return the blind to its usual position. If you used an approved damp method, let it dry before raising it. Clean the window glass as a separate task, keeping spray off the covering.

Which cleaning method suits your blinds?

Use dry care for real wood, check permitted damp methods for faux wood or metal, and follow fabric-specific instructions for shades. The table below points to each material; your product’s care instructions take priority.

How to clean wooden blinds

Keep the routine dry. Hunter Douglas recommends a dry cloth or soft vacuum brush for its Parkland wood blinds and warns against steam, excessive moisture, solvents and scrubbing cleansers. When cleaning nearby glass, apply cleaner to the cloth instead of spraying it towards the wood. See the Parkland wood-blind care instructions.

Do not assume that a damp method allowed for a painted shutter is also suitable for a wooden blind. For sticky marks on real wood, ask the manufacturer what the finish permits.

How to clean faux wood and vinyl blinds

Start by removing loose dust. Hunter Douglas recommends gentle dusting or a brush attachment for EverWood blinds and cautions against abrasive products and chemical solvents. Its faux wood care advice is product-specific.

Some faux wood products allow a lightly damp cloth: LEVOLOR’s wood and faux wood guide (PDF) permits this for faux wood only. Check your own model before using water; keep the cloth well wrung out and avoid wetting the headrail or controls.

How to clean aluminium and metal Venetian blinds

Thin slats need a light touch. Hunter Douglas’s metal-blind instructions recommend dusting or a brush attachment and explain that water immersion is allowed only for certain products, with exceptions for decorative tapes and operating systems. A metal finish alone does not make the whole blind safe to soak. For an everyday clean, keep it installed and follow its approved surface-cleaning method.

How to clean vertical blinds

First check the hanging vanes: rigid vinyl and fabric need different treatment. Support each vane while removing dust and work along its length without tugging on the top clip. For marks, use the maker’s instructions for that material; do not assume that removable fabric vanes can go into a washing machine. Hunter Douglas’s care guide explains why the specific product and fabric matter.

What about fabric, roller and cellular shades?

These are not slats to wipe down with the same cloth. Check the exact fabric and coating before brushing, vacuuming or blotting. Hunter Douglas’s cellular shade guidance allows gentle methods but identifies excluded fabrics that need different care. It also warns against poking objects through the cells to remove trapped insects. Blinds.com cautions against soaking cellular shades because their folds can lose shape. Ask a window-treatment specialist about persistent stains or delicate fabrics.

How do you remove kitchen grease from blinds?

Remove loose dust first, then use only a grease-cleaning method approved for the material and finish. Start with one small area; more pressure or a stronger product is not automatically the right next step.

For a washable blind whose instructions permit it, use a lightly damp cloth and the recommended mild cleaner, then remove residue and dry as directed. Blinds.com describes a mild dish-soap method for suitable mini blinds. That does not make it a recipe for real wood, fabric or every coating.

If the first gentle pass does not help, pause before reaching for an oven cleaner, abrasive pad or solvent. Note the room, the material and the type of mark when asking the manufacturer or cleaner for advice. Discolouration and finish damage may not be removable dirt.

When several rooms need attention, use our room-by-room deep cleaning checklist to prioritise the work. Detailed blind cleaning still needs to be selected separately.

How do you clean interior shutters?

Clean interior shutters as a set of louvres, panels and frames. Identify whether they are real wood, vinyl or composite before treating marks, and keep the hinges and operating parts out of your wiping path.

Clear the sill so you can reach the shutter frame as well as the louvres.

Dust the louvres and frame

Open the panel only as its hardware allows, then work through the accessible faces and edges. Change the louvre angle to reach the opposite side. Avoid forcing a tilt rod or pushing a panel beyond its normal opening range. Keep a separate final check for the frame corners, where a quick pass across the louvres can miss dust.

Wood shutters: follow the finish-specific instructions

Hunter Douglas recommends light dusting and gentle brush vacuuming for its hardwood shutters; it also allows carefully moistened spot cleaning. Follow your own shutter’s instructions and dry treated areas promptly. Do not soak a wooden panel. See the manufacturer’s wood, vinyl and alternative-wood shutter guidance.

Vinyl and composite shutters: check what “washable” means

For vinyl and alternative-wood shutters, the same guidance recommends gentle dust removal and avoiding abrasives and chemical solvents. Some products permit mild soap and water, but a moisture-resistant louvre does not mean you should flood hinges, frames or motorised components. Confirm the approved method for the whole assembly in the product care guide.

This section covers interior shutters. Exterior shutters, restoration, repainting and high-access work need a different plan.

How often should you clean blinds and shutters?

Use a quick weekly dust check as a starting routine, then clean according to what you see. A kitchen window may need attention sooner than a rarely used bedroom; detailed cleaning does not have to mean wet cleaning.

This is Heron’s suggested routine, not a fixed manufacturer interval. Check one slat or louvre in each room before adding the task to your list. When dust returns quickly, note which windows were open, which rooms were used and whether other surfaces need attention too.

  • During routine upkeep: check accessible slats, louvres and sills; remove light dust as needed.
  • When marks remain: plan material-appropriate detailed work, window by window.
  • Before moving in: include window coverings in your cleaning plan before unpacking.
  • After building work: tell the cleaner about renovation dust and use the post-renovation cleaning guide; confirm whether coverings need a specialist.

If you are choosing a repeat service, compare regular upkeep with a Deep clean and include window coverings explicitly in the agreed household plan.

When should you book professional blind or shutter cleaning?

Get help when the coverings are delicate, the material is uncertain, the access is difficult or the buildup is beyond the method the manufacturer permits.

Describe the product and condition first. A house-cleaning visit and a specialist window-treatment service can have very different scopes.

What Heron’s detailed blind cleaning includes

Heron’s Basic clean starts from $89 before HST. Detailed blind cleaning is a separate optional add-on at +$7 per window before HST: both sides of reachable, suitable slats are hand-wiped. Count each window with blinds once, not each slat or panel. It is separate from Basic, Deep, move-in/out and interior window glass cleaning. Fabric shades, curtains, blind removal and specialist-access work are not included.

Use the cleaning calculator to select the work, then confirm the material and access when booking. Shutter cleaning is not automatically covered by the blind add-on; ask us to confirm its scope and price. We do not advertise ultrasonic cleaning or blind restoration.

Blinds and shutters: common cleaning questions

What is the easiest way to clean dusty blinds without removing them?

Identify the material, leave suitable blinds installed and remove loose dust from both faces with a clean soft cloth or an approved brush attachment. Check overlap areas and collect fallen dust from the sill. Treat remaining marks only with a method the product allows.

Can I use vinegar to clean blinds?

Do not use vinegar as a universal blind cleaner. Check the instructions for the exact material and finish. If no liquid method is specified, stay with the approved dry method and ask the manufacturer before treating marks.

Can I wash blinds in the bathtub?

Only if the exact product instructions permit removal and immersion. Some metal blinds allow it with specific exceptions, while other materials, tapes and operating parts do not. A bathtub soak is not the default method in this guide.

Can I use a steam cleaner on blinds or shutters?

Do not assume steam is suitable. Hunter Douglas specifically warns against steam exposure for its wood blinds. Other products have their own limits; use steam only if the exact manufacturer instructions permit it for that treatment. Heron’s detailed blind add-on is hand-wiping suitable slats, not steam cleaning.

Are plantation shutters cleaned the same way as blinds?

Interior plantation shutters have louvres within framed panels. Their material still determines the care method, but the frames, panel edges and hardware also need consideration. Follow the shutter-specific section rather than applying a blind-soaking method.

Is blind cleaning included in a Deep clean or window cleaning?

With Heron, detailed slat-by-slat blind cleaning is an optional selection. It is not automatically included in Deep cleaning or the interior-window glass package. Shutters need their own scope and price confirmed before booking.

Will cleaning restore yellowed or damaged blinds?

Do not assume it will. A mark may be removable buildup, discolouration or damage to the finish. Identify the product and ask the manufacturer before attempting bleaching, abrasive scrubbing or restoration; ordinary cleaning cannot promise to reverse material damage.
