Questions to ask before hiring a cleaning service in Halton and Mississauga
A useful cleaning quote tells you what will be done, who is responsible for it and what you will pay. Use these questions before the first visit, whether you are comparing Heron with another company or arranging professional cleaning for the first time.

What should you ask before hiring a cleaner?
Ask for a written task list and full price, then check insurance, screening, team continuity, product choices, access and the terms for changing a visit or reporting missed work. Keep the answers beside each quote so you can compare the same job.
| Check | Ask the company |
|---|---|
| The exact work | Which rooms and tasks are included, and which interiors or detail jobs cost extra? |
| The full price | Is the quote fixed or hourly? Does it include supplies, access charges and HST? |
| First and repeat visits | What changes after the first visit, and does the discount cover the same task list? |
| Insurance and screening | Can I see current insurance details, and how are cleaners checked? |
| The returning team | Do you aim to send familiar cleaners, and what happens when someone is away? |
| Products and surfaces | Which exact products will you use, with what fragrance and surface restrictions? |
| Entry and preparation | How do we arrange keys, pets, parking and access to the surfaces being cleaned? |
| Changes and missed work | What notice do you need, and how do I report something missed? |
| The confirmed booking | Have we agreed the date, arrival window, tasks and final price? |
This guide is written by Heron Cleaning, a provider serving Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Mississauga, Ontario. Our examples explain our own service; they are not independent rankings of cleaning companies. Ask each provider to confirm its current terms.
1. What exactly is included in the clean?
At Heron, the $89 starting price is the Basic clean for a condo or one-bedroom: reachable dusting, accessible floors vacuumed and hard floors mopped. Bathroom cleaning, kitchen cleaning and optional interiors are selected separately. A starting price is not a whole-home task list.
Count full bathrooms and powder rooms separately. State the above-ground floor area, whether a basement is included, any pets and the tasks you want done inside appliances or cabinets. Ask about window glass and blinds instead of assuming that the word “Deep” includes them.
Heron's Deep upgrade adds detail and buildup work by home size. When selected, the kitchen is +$45 with Deep, compared with +$25 with Basic. Oven interiors, fridge interiors, kitchen cabinet interiors, detailed blinds and interior window cleaning remain separate choices. Use our Deep cleaning checklist to compare the work, or the move-out checklist for an empty home.
A useful request sounds like: “Three bedrooms, two full bathrooms and the kitchen, with the oven interior added; no basement or window glass.” That is much easier to compare than “a full clean.”
2. What is the full price, including tax?
Compare the same home, condition, rooms and extras at the same frequency. Ask whether the amount is fixed for that agreed work or based on cleaner-hours, and get the tax-inclusive total before booking.
| Example | Before HST | Total with HST | Bi-weekly from visit 2, before HST |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-bedroom condo, 650 sq ft, one full bathroom and kitchen. Adjust this example | $134 | $151.42 | $113.90 |
| Three-bedroom house, 1,700 sq ft, two full bathrooms, a powder room and kitchen. Adjust this example | $257 | $290.41 | $218.45 |
These are illustrative quotes, not customer bills. Neither example selects pets, a basement, appliance interiors or window glass. Heron uses the same rate card in all four cities; other companies set their own prices. Open the three-bedroom example and change the selections to match your home.
Heron's recurring savings begin with the second visit: 20% off weekly, 15% off bi-weekly and 10% off monthly Basic cleans. A monthly booking does not automatically include a Deep clean. Compare the first visit separately, particularly when buildup needs a one-time reset.
For an hourly quote, ask how many cleaners attend and how long each works. Two cleaners working three hours means six cleaner-hours. A fixed-scope quote instead lists the agreed work and its price. Heron agrees extra work before adding it; see our booking terms and price comparison guide.
3. How do you check insurance, reviews and the returning team?
Ask to see current insurance details, how cleaners are screened and how a substitute is handled. Read reviews for relevant work and recent experiences; a star rating alone does not tell you what was cleaned.
Heron's insurance information explains the published cover, and cleaners are background-checked before their first visit. Ask about the policy's scope rather than assuming every kind of damage or specialist task is covered.
Heron aims to send a familiar two-person team whenever possible. The same individuals are not guaranteed every visit. If someone is away, we let you know about a team change before the visit. Put your access instructions and preferences on the booking so the visit does not depend on one person's memory.
When reading reviews, look for the service you need: recurring upkeep, an occupied-home Deep clean or an empty-home move-out. Notice whether concerns were acknowledged and resolved. Ask a company to explain its process in its own words instead of relying on an unsupported “best” claim.
4. Which products will be used in your home?
Ask for the exact product names, their intended surfaces and the fragrance option for your booking. Heron offers eco-friendly options; tell us your preferences before the visit so we can confirm the products for the work you selected.
A preference for fragrance-free products should be discussed explicitly. “Eco-friendly” does not identify a fragrance, a certification or compatibility with a particular finish. If an ingredient matters to you, ask to review the label. We do not treat a green label as an allergy or health guarantee.
Tell the cleaner about marble, limestone, sealed or unsealed wood and any appliance or flooring care instructions. The Natural Stone Institute advises choosing cleaners for the stone type and warns that acids such as vinegar can etch calcareous stone. A product useful on one surface is not automatically suitable on the next.
Health Canada advises following product directions, keeping products in their original containers and never mixing household chemicals. If you want the team to use your supplies, keep their labels and confirm them with us beforehand. Heavy buildup may need a different agreed method; staining, damaged finishes and mould remediation are not ordinary cleaning promises.
See the product-request details for Oakville, Burlington, Milton or Mississauga.
5. What should you arrange before the visit?
Agree entry, parking, pets and preparation before cleaning day. Clear the surfaces you want cleaned and explain any fragile items, restricted rooms or special care instructions.
For a condo, confirm the buzzer or concierge process, visitor parking and any building requirements. For a house, describe the basement separately from the above-ground living area and make the agreed rooms accessible. Arrange a safe place for pets during the work.
If you book inside kitchen cabinets, empty them beforehand or select cabinet emptying and repacking as well. Interior cleaning and handling the contents are separate jobs. Confirm fridge and oven preparation and any access limits when you book; do not assume general tidying or putting belongings away is included.
Agree a key, lockbox or other entry arrangement directly with the company, including what happens after the visit. Keep access codes out of public reviews and enquiry comments.
6. What happens if plans change or something is missed?
Read the notice period and the remedy for missed work before accepting a booking. Heron asks for 24 hours’ notice to move or skip a recurring visit and offers a free re-clean for missed or poorly cleaned work within the agreed service reported within 24 hours of completion. Unbooked extras and new mess are excluded. Statutory rights remain unchanged.
Report the specific room or task and keep your agreed list handy. A re-clean addresses the booked cleaning work; it does not add unselected services or repair an existing finish. The current booking and service terms explain the process.
Heron answers booking calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Call 289-813-7484 with your quote code. Cleaning appointments depend on availability and are confirmed by phone; an online quote does not reserve a slot, and round-the-clock phone access does not promise an immediate cleaning visit.
Does the city or neighbourhood change what you should ask?
The core questions stay the same across Oakville, Burlington, Milton, Mississauga and all of Halton Hills. The practical details are your home, surfaces, building access and selected work; Heron applies the same published rates across these five service areas.
For Oakville, compare a Bronte or Uptown Core condo with a Glen Abbey or Joshua Creek house by rooms and floor area. In Burlington, count the basement separately in an Aldershot home and confirm entry for a downtown condo. In Milton, include every powder room in a Beaty or Clarke townhouse and describe special finishes in Old Milton. In Mississauga, confirm condo access in City Centre or Port Credit and the selected floors in Meadowvale or East Credit.
If the job is a workplace, ask for a commercial task list and a walkthrough. Heron also provides office and commercial cleaning, quoted separately from its residential calculator.
For cleaning in Georgetown, ask the same questions about products, selected work and team arrangements. Check entry arrangements in Georgetown North and the floors and stairways to include in Moore Park, so the booking describes the actual home. The Downtown Georgetown surface-care guidance helps you prepare product questions.
Questions about choosing a cleaning service
Is the lowest starting price the best comparison?
Only if the included work matches. Compare room counts, floor area, condition, optional interiors, supplies, access, frequency and tax before deciding.
Does Heron guarantee the same cleaners every visit?
Heron aims to send a familiar two-person team whenever possible. The same individuals are not guaranteed; we let you know about a team change before the visit.
Can I request eco-friendly or fragrance-free products?
Tell Heron your product and fragrance preferences when you book. Eco-friendly options are available; confirm the exact product and its suitability for your surfaces before the visit.
Can I call Heron at night to arrange a cleaning?
Yes. Heron answers calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Cleaning appointments, the selected work and the price are confirmed by phone, subject to availability.
