Thanksgiving Cleaning Checklist: A 3-Day Plan for Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Mississauga Hosts
Thanksgiving is Monday, October 12. Here is what to clean and when, how early the turkey needs the fridge, what happens to garbage day in Halton and Peel, and what it costs to hand the cleaning to Heron, with prices from our published rate card.
When should you start cleaning for Thanksgiving 2026?
Start three days before your dinner. Thanksgiving Day is Monday, October 12, 2026, and the long weekend begins on Saturday, October 10, so the cleaning falls between Wednesday, October 7 and Sunday, October 11, depending on the day you host.
Thanksgiving Day is one of Ontario's nine public holidays (Government of Ontario, Employment Standards Act guide); in 2026 it falls on October 12 (Canada Holidays, Ontario 2026). Three days gives you one layer of work a day, and keeps the day of the dinner for cooking.

What should you clean before Thanksgiving guests arrive?
Clean the guest path: the front entry, the powder room or guest bathroom, the kitchen, the dining table and the living room. Bedrooms and rooms that guests will not enter can wait until after the long weekend.
The front entry
In October the mess comes in on boots: wet leaves and grit. Put down a mat and a boot tray, clear shoes off the floor, and make room for coats in the closet or on hooks.
The powder room or guest bathroom
Toilet, sink, taps, mirror and floor, then a fresh hand towel, spare toilet paper within reach and an empty bin with a liner. It is the room guests use on their own, so it is the one they notice.
The kitchen
Clear the counters for serving space, clean the sink and taps, wipe the appliance fronts and the stovetop, and run and empty the dishwasher before guests arrive so the plates have somewhere to go.
The table and the living room
Dust the surfaces people sit near, vacuum, wipe the chairs and clear the coffee table for plates and glasses.
A guest room, if someone is staying
Fresh bed linen, a cleared surface, a few empty hangers and a vacuumed floor.

How early should you clear fridge space for a Thanksgiving turkey?
Clear a shelf before the turkey comes home. Health Canada says to thaw poultry in the refrigerator for 24 hours for every 2.5 kg (5 lb), so a 7.5 kg turkey needs three full days in the fridge.

While the fridge is emptier, wipe the shelves and drawers. If you would rather hand it off, the inside of the fridge (shelves, drawers, door bins, seals and the freezer) is from +$19 on a Heron clean for a standard fridge in normal condition.
Should you clean the oven before Thanksgiving?
Yes, if it smokes or has spills baked on, but do not run the self-cleaning cycle in Thanksgiving week. Consumer Reports advises running it several weeks before a big meal, so any fault shows up while there is still time to fix it.
The advice comes from Consumer Reports, which also says to take the racks out first and to ventilate the kitchen while the cycle runs. If it is too late for that, clean the oven by hand once it is cold, or add the inside of the oven to a Heron clean: from +$19 for a standard oven in normal condition, covering the cavity, racks, door and inside door glass. Heavy grease is confirmed with you before booking, and a double oven counts as two.
When is garbage day on Thanksgiving week in Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Mississauga?
It depends on the region. Mississauga is in Peel Region, which skipped pickup on Thanksgiving Monday in 2024 and collected everything one day later that week. Oakville, Burlington and Milton are in Halton Region, whose online waste calendar shows the schedule for each address. In both regions, turkey bones and food scraps go in the green bin (Peel) or the Green Cart (Halton).

What should you clean after Thanksgiving?
The fridge, the oven, the floors and the bathroom your guests used, once the leftovers are sorted. Tuesday, October 13 is the first weekday after the long weekend.
Clear old containers out of the fridge before the leftovers go in, wipe oven spills once it is cold, vacuum and wash the floors guests walked on, and give the powder room a proper clean. The same Heron add-ons apply after the dinner as before it.
