Too Tired to Clean? What to Hand Off First (and What It Costs)
Some weeks the house is the last thing you have energy for. This is a plain guide to which jobs are worth handing to a cleaner first, which ones are still quicker to keep, and what each choice costs, with real prices rather than a quote form.
The short answer: hand off the bathrooms, the kitchen and the floors first. Those three are where a tired evening goes, and together they are most of a cleaner’s visit. Keep the ten-minute jobs, tidying, laundry, dishes, because no cleaning company does them well and you should not pay for them.

Why the house feels impossible when you are exhausted
Cleaning is not one job. It is thirty small jobs with no natural end, and the tiring part is deciding, every evening, which of them matters tonight. A shift-working nurse, a parent with a newborn, someone caring for a relative, anyone in a stretch of long weeks: the energy for the deciding goes before the energy for the doing.
Handing part of it to someone else works because it removes the deciding. The bathrooms get done on Thursday whether or not you had a good week. You do not have to notice the grout to know it is handled.
This guide is about the practical side. If exhaustion has been going on for a long time and rest is not fixing it, that is worth a conversation with your doctor; a clean bathroom helps a bad week, it does not treat one.
Hand off in this order
1. Bathrooms
The room most people put off, and the one that takes a professional the least time relative to how much better it looks afterwards. With Heron each full bathroom is +$20 and a powder room +$12: toilet, tub and shower, sink and vanity, mirror, fixtures and the floor washed.
2. The kitchen
Counters, sink and taps, the stovetop surface, the fronts of every appliance and cupboard, and the floor: +$25. Dishes are not included, and the inside of the oven (from +$19) and fridge (from +$19) are separate choices, so you only pay for them when they are the problem.
3. Floors and dust
This is the Basic clean itself: every reachable surface dusted, every accessible floor vacuumed, hard floors mopped, from $89 for a condo or one-bedroom and $149 for a 3-bedroom, plus a small size adjustment above 1,500 sq ft. If you have pets, the +$25 pets line covers the extra passes pet hair needs.
4. The once-a-year layer
Baseboards, door frames, window tracks, light fixtures, the buildup behind and under things. Nobody does this when they are tired, and it does not need doing every visit. Add the Deep upgrade once or twice a year (+$59 under 1,000 sq ft, +$89 for a typical 3-bedroom) and let the regular visits stay Basic.
What to keep for yourself
Tidying, laundry and dishes. A cleaning company works around your belongings; it does not know where they live, and paying someone to guess is bad value. The same goes for admin: bills on the counter, the school forms, the recycling. Ten minutes of tidying the night before a visit is the best-paid ten minutes of your week, because the cleaners then spend the whole visit cleaning.
If even that is too much on a bad week, do not cancel the visit. Tell us and we will work around it. A clean around the clutter is still a clean.

Before the first visit: the 20-minute version
Do not clean before the cleaners come. Clear the surfaces you want dusted, put the dishes in the dishwasher, pick clothes up off the bathroom floor, and leave out any product you would rather we used (for allergies, pets or a particular surface). That is all. If you are not home, a key, a lockbox code or a concierge routine is fine; most of our recurring clients are at work when we come.
Tell us what matters most. If the bathroom is the room that is getting to you, say so and it gets the first and the most careful hour.
Questions people ask when they are worn out
Do I need to tidy before the cleaners come?
A little, and only the ten-minute kind: surfaces clear, dishes away, floors free of clothes and toys. You do not need to clean. If a bad week means the tidying does not happen either, keep the visit anyway and we work around what is there.
Is it worth paying for cleaning when money is tight?
Start smaller than you think. A monthly Basic clean of a one-bedroom is $89, $80.10 from the second visit, and it resets the floors and dust so the rest of the month is maintenance rather than catch-up. Bathrooms and the kitchen can be added later, or only on some visits. There is no contract; 24 hours’ notice to change a visit, so a lean month can skip a visit.
Can I book just the bathrooms and the kitchen?
Rooms are added to a Basic clean rather than booked on their own, so a one-bedroom with the bathroom and kitchen is $134, which is close to what those two rooms cost anyway. If you truly want a list of specific tasks and nothing else, book hourly: $35 per cleaner, per hour with a 3-hour minimum per cleaner, and we work down your list in the order you give it.
How often should a cleaner come if I am always exhausted?
Bi-weekly is what most of our clients settle on: the home never gets far enough behind to feel like a project, and it is 20% off from the second visit. Weekly suits homes with pets, small children or shift work. Monthly is the reset option for a smaller home or a tighter budget.
Do cleaners do laundry or dishes?
No. Heron cleans surfaces, floors and the rooms you add; laundry, dishes and tidying belongings are not part of a clean, which is why we suggest keeping those ten-minute jobs for yourself and handing off the hours-long ones.
